Honey DNA? Why we want to know.

Bee's can travel up to five miles away from their hive to get resources, whether that's nectar, pollen, water, and resin. So when our customers ask us "is this clover honey" our usual answer is we simply don't know. We also take pride in providing you the most up-to-date information about what you are putting into your body.

“Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.” He was literally saying that a person’s mental, emotional, and physical health could be determined by what they ate, and indeed, their very character revealed. ~by Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin in 1826, in his seven-volume book The Physiology of Taste

That's why we've teamed up with Jonah Ventures, a dedicated environmental DNA laboratory to help us give you the best knowledge possible about exactly what's in our honey. Using their Honey DNA Kit, we've submitted a sample of our 2024 August honey (the one you are buying now) and we're hoping to get the results back in the next 8-10 weeks.

Once we have the results here, we will be posting a full menu of the results. LIke you, we're hoping to see the list of the plant species they find in your honey in relative abundance so we can pinpoint the preference or flower availability for our bees.

Honey/Pollen Identification Report

Their pollen identification report includes the DNA sequences we detected, the species they match to, the % match, and the frequency of the sequence, which can be translated into relative abundance.

DNA sequencing for pollen identification can be much more accurate and less time consuming than a microscope, with a much quicker turnaround.
