  2. Upper Entrance Shim: Boost foraging efficiency with a single small, defensible entrances just below the honey super. Returning bees can quickly access the honey area—simply attach the included yellow entrance piece, and you’re set.
  3. Vent Shim: Manage heat and humidity for optimal hive temperature control. Adjust ventilation from 1 to 8 sections to suit your needs.

If using this as a vent do I put it above or below the inner cover?

For the best performance, always place the vent above your inner cover. When positioned below the inner cover, bees tend to heavily propolize the vents, which can restrict airflow. Placing the vent above the inner cover helps prevent this and allows it to function properly.

Does using the shim as an entrance encourage burr comb?

Yes, using a shim as a hive entrance can sometimes encourage burr comb, but it is generally considered a minor disadvantage compared to the benefits of increased foraging efficiency and better ventilation.

Does your 3-in-1 Super Shim™ work on 8-frame hives?

No, at this time the 3-in-1 Super Shim™ is designed specifically for 10-frame hive bodies. However, we are currently developing a version for 6-frame hive bodies, which we hope to have available by the end of 2026.

Winter Feeding

Space for Fondant

During cold months, bees often cluster tightly to stay warm and can’t move far to reach stored honey. Fondant—placed directly above the cluster—gives them an energy source they can access without breaking their cluster.

In the Fondant Shim® configuration, the 3-in-1 Super Shim® creates the ideal amount of space to place fondant directly on top of the frames while still maintaining proper clearance for the cover. This helps improve winter feeding efficiency, reduces moisture buildup from improvised feeding methods, and allows beekeepers to quickly check and replenish fondant with minimal disturbance to the colony.

Upper hive Entrance

Boost Foraging Efficiency

Adding hole/s between the queen excluder and the honey supers give bees easier, more direct access to the honey storage area. The hole allows bees to bypass the brood nest and travel quickly to the honey supers, which can help in speeding nectar processing and possibly increasing honey production.

Every Super Shim comes with three options, one, two or three wholes depending on your needs. The hole is about 5/8 inch in diameter

  • Provides bees a shorter route directly to honey storage, which may improve efficiency and honey filling of the supers.
  • Increases airflow and ventilation in the hive, aiding in honey drying and reducing moisture.
  • Can help bees bypass the brood area and avoid congestion during nectar flow.
